MPC’s goal is to put a halt to the illegal trade in young macaques and to better protect the natural habitats of the species in Morocco.
MPC uses a multi level approach in reaching its objectives, targeting local communities / poachers and the Moroccan authorities and the EU and every involved party in between. MPC strongly believes that conservation is only successful if the local government fully supports the conservation measures, which is why MPC has worked so hard in the last years to gain the trust and goodwill and official cooperation of the Moroccan authorities. This has resulted in the creation of a national conservation action plan for the Barbary macaque in Morocco, one of MPC’s biggest successes. MPC is now the official partner of the Moroccan authorities for the protection of Barbary macaques in Morocco, and the national conservation action plan now provides for a framework in which we can prevent this species from declining further.
MPC also believes that frequent monitoring of the wild populations and the illegal trade is important to monitor if the measures that we take are successful or not. Also the data collected during these surveys can be used to convince authorities or NGOs to take action.
